Within the framework of the special subject fields programme run by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Association) the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is responsible for collecting literature on the history (including social and economic history), politics, education and scholarship, regional geography etc. of the countries of Eastern Europe.

The East European Department maintains the library's single largest specialized collection which covers the countries of East, Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe with more than 866.000 volumes in vernacular and western languages.

The East European Department offers a free personal alterging service of its recent acquisitions. Subscribers may receive a list of publications relating to fields of specific interest once a month by filling in a form stating the time periods, regions or subjects of their choice.

Each subscriber may order up to three different monthly lists. The subscription may be cancelled any time.

The lists are distributed as e-mail attachments in TXT-Format (Ansi).
